UK MP Sues Elon Musk's xAI Over Grok-Generated Deepfakes
Jess Asato, Labour MP for Lowestoft, launched legal action against xAI in London's High Court on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, alleging that the company's Grok image-generation tool created non-consensual sexualized images and video content of her without permission (Economic Times).
Images Generated in January, Lawsuit Filed in June
The offending content was generated in early January 2026, months before the lawsuit filing (Quartz). Asato's legal team documented two specific outputs: a sexualized image of her in a bikini and a video depicting her being chloroformed and prepared for sexual assault (The Independent).
Asato told the Financial Times that she discovered the video "showing her being chloroformed and prepared for a sexual assault" had been produced by Grok, prompting the legal response. "There has been recent research that shows that it is still possible to use Grok to create sexualised images of women," Asato said, pointing to Elon Musk's public commitment in January 2026 to prevent exactly this type of abuse.
Legal Grounds and Remedies
The High Court action names xAI as the defendant and asserts breaches of UK data protection law and the tort of misuse of private information. Lucie Audibert, Asato's solicitor, confirmed the case is seeking "damages, a declaration of illegality and an order requiring xAI to stop all further illegality – by implementing measures to prevent this type of abuse from happening again" (Computer Weekly).
Asato stated plainly: "I, and my lawyers, believe that xAI has contravened data protection and privacy law, and when somebody contravenes the law, they should be held accountable for it."
Broader Context: Scale of Abuse
The lawsuit arrives amid documented evidence of systemic misuse. Research cited in filings showed that Grok generated approximately 3 million sexualized images in a single 11-day period prior to feature restrictions, with 23,000 of those depicting children. As of late June 2026, no criminal charges had been filed against xAI or Elon Musk.
This case marks the first named-plaintiff civil litigation against an AI agent company over generated non-consensual intimate imagery in the UK courts.
