Google donates Agent2Agent protocol to Linux Foundation
Google has donated its Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol to the Linux Foundation, according to the company's open-source retrospective published this month. The move formalizes governance of the interoperability standard that Google announced in April 2025 at Cloud Next with contributions from more than 50 technology partners.
What A2A Does
A2A is an open specification that enables AI agents from different vendors and frameworks to discover each other's capabilities and coordinate tasks across enterprise systems and organizational boundaries. The protocol allows agents built on different platforms—whether Claude, Gemini, or proprietary systems—to communicate and collaborate without custom integrations. Google Cloud's initial partnership announcement in April 2025 emphasized the goal of standardizing agent-to-agent interoperability at scale.
Linux Foundation Governance
By donating A2A to the Linux Foundation within weeks of the initial announcement, Google placed the protocol under neutral stewardship rather than maintaining direct control. This governance model is intended to accelerate adoption and reduce vendor lock-in concerns from enterprise customers evaluating multi-agent architectures. The Linux Foundation's track record with projects like Kubernetes and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation has made it a trusted governance home for infrastructure standards in the cloud-native space.
Industry Adoption Path
The 50+ launch partners who contributed to A2A's initial design include infrastructure vendors, enterprise software companies, and consulting firms. Google's open-source blog positions the donation as evidence of how open-source practices are being adapted for the AI-first economy, where standardized communication protocols between autonomous systems will become foundational infrastructure.
The donation does not alter A2A's technical specification or the existing contributions from launch partners. Instead, it signals that Google is willing to cede governance control in service of broader ecosystem adoption—a calculation that assumes interoperability between many competing agents benefits the overall market for agent deployments more than proprietary lock-in would.
Timing and Context
The August 2026 retrospective comes as enterprises continue experimenting with multi-agent deployments across customer service, finance, and supply-chain operations. Standardized inter-agent protocols reduce the engineering overhead of orchestrating agents from different vendors, making it easier for organizations to compose agent workflows without maintaining custom translation layers.
The move reflects a pattern: Google contributed TensorFlow to open governance, donated Kubernetes to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, and has repeatedly found that vendor-neutral infrastructure standards create larger markets. A2A follows that precedent for the agent economy.
