FBI arrests ex-OpenAI engineer over covert recording device
The FBI arrested former OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan on October 9, 2026, after federal prosecutors charged him with installing a concealed recording device inside the company's San Francisco office, according to court documents filed in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California.
The Arrest and Charges
Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national who had worked at OpenAI since July 2025, made his initial appearance in federal court on October 13, 2026. He was charged under 18 U.S.C. § 2511(1)(b) with using or attempting to use an electronic device to intercept oral communications. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release, according to the Justice Department.
How the Device Was Discovered
OpenAI discovered the recording device during a security sweep on September 30, 2026, in an executive conference room at its San Francisco facility. The FBI complaint described the device as thumb-sized, featuring a microphone and camera-connectivity capability, concealed in toilet paper and plugged into a USB port behind a television, according to law enforcement documents.
Alleged Motive and Investigation
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that Alfozan "allegedly concealed a covert recording device inside his employer's executive conference room to secretly capture sensitive communications about the company's super intelligence technology," according to the Justice Department. The case is being handled by the National Security, Cyber & Special Prosecutions Section of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California.
OpenAI's Response
OpenAI referred the matter to the FBI and said it was "grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest." The company also noted that the investigation remained ongoing as of the arrest announcement.
The case underscores growing security concerns within AI companies as they develop increasingly sensitive proprietary technologies. OpenAI, which is at the forefront of developing large language models and autonomous AI agents, operates in an intensely competitive environment where access to unreleased technology and strategic discussions carry significant commercial and national security implications.
