Akamai launches Agent Sandbox and AI Inference services
New Agent Infrastructure from Akamai
Akamai Technologies announced two foundational AI services on October 27, 2026, designed to address core operational needs in the emerging agent economy. Akamai Inference provides managed access to open-weight and custom models through OpenAI-compatible APIs, while Akamai Agent Sandbox creates an isolated execution environment where agent-generated code can run safely in production.
Both products are now available in beta from Akamai's Cambridge, Massachusetts headquarters. The Inference service offers serverless, pay-per-use deployment as well as dedicated deployment options, positioning Akamai as infrastructure middleware in an increasingly fragmented model ecosystem.
How Agent Sandbox Works
Agent Sandbox uses WebAssembly isolation as its technical foundation, constraining compute, memory, outbound connections, and system capabilities available to code that agents generate. The service is built as an open-source component of the Spin framework, meaning developers can inspect the isolation mechanisms and adapt them to enterprise security requirements.
The architecture separates agent logic from execution: agents run on Akamai Functions, while the code they produce executes in a separate isolated environment. This dual-layer design reduces the blast radius if agent-generated code contains vulnerabilities or behaves unexpectedly. Akamai describes the purpose plainly: giving agents "a place to execute."
Inference as a Service Layer
Akamai Inference abstracts away model hosting complexity. By offering both open-weight and custom model access through a single OpenAI-compatible API, the service appeals to enterprises that want to avoid vendor lock-in while maintaining operational simplicity. Beta pricing and deployment options are available now, though final GA terms have not been announced.
The timing reflects broader infrastructure consolidation around agents. As autonomous systems move from experimentation to production workloads, companies need isolation layers, model routing, and execution governance—exactly the surfaces Akamai is targeting. The open-source Spin component also signals intent to compete on interoperability rather than proprietary features.
Shipping Status and Availability
Both Akamai Agent Sandbox (through the Spin SDK) and Akamai Inference are available in beta today. Developers can begin integrating and testing against both services. General availability timelines and production SLAs have not been disclosed.
This launch is part of a broader wave of infrastructure tooling aimed at making agent deployment safer and more operationally feasible. Unlike earlier announcements focused on theoretical agent capabilities, Akamai's move puts concrete execution and isolation primitives into developers' hands now.
