Visa, Mastercard, Ant launch AI agent trust framework

Visa, Mastercard, and Ant International announced a joint Know-Your-Agent interoperability framework on September 10, 2026, designed to identify and verify AI agents making purchases on behalf of user

Visa, Mastercard, and Ant International announced a collaborative effort to build a Know-Your-Agent (KYA) interoperability framework on September 10, 2026, marking the first major industry standard for verifying autonomous AI agents in payment transactions.

The three payment giants will jointly develop infrastructure to identify and verify AI agents that operate on behalf of users during purchases, according to Reuters. The framework aims to let card networks, digital wallets, agent platforms, and online marketplaces recognize trusted AI agents across payment ecosystems while preserving each organization's own approval and risk-management processes, Ant International said in a statement datelined Shanghai/Singapore.

Industry Collaboration on Agent Standards

The collaboration signals that the payment industry is moving to standardize how autonomous agents authenticate themselves and prove trustworthiness in commerce. Rather than forcing each platform to build separate verification systems, the three companies are pooling expertise to create an interoperable standard—a critical requirement as agentic commerce scales globally.

The framework builds on existing protocols from Visa, Mastercard, and Ant International, Reuters reported, suggesting the companies leveraged existing infrastructure investments rather than starting from scratch.

What This Means for Agent Deployment

The KYA standard directly addresses a fundamental friction point: how payment networks, merchants, and users verify that an autonomous agent is legitimately authorized to spend money on their behalf. Without interoperable verification, each agent platform would need separate integrations with each payment processor—a scaling bottleneck.

By creating a shared verification layer, the framework enables AI agents to move fluidly across payment ecosystems. A shopping agent verified under KYA standards could work with Visa, Mastercard, and Ant International payment flows without requiring custom integration work at each step.

The Asia-Pacific focus of the announcement—anchored by Ant International's Shanghai base—reflects the region's leadership in digital payments and agent deployment. However, the interoperability ambition suggests the companies intend the framework to scale globally.

No regulatory enforcement mechanism, court involvement, or formal compliance deadline was disclosed in the announcement. The collaboration remains a voluntary industry initiative rather than a mandate.
